Periodontology is a rapidly developing science and the practice of periodontics is to some extent still confused by the surprising amount of mythology that surrounds the discipline. This new revised edition reviews the present state of knowledge and relates this to a programme of patient treatment in a way that makes it a sound book for use by both undergraduate and postgraduate dental students. The text has been updated in areas where new information has emerged. The aetiology of periodontitis has been redeveloped into three chapters. The possibility that gingivitis and periodontitis are a series of sequential infections and the role of diagnostic bacteriology in assessment of treatment need to be considered. The current vogue for conservative treatment in periodontology is appreciated but the need to understand the techniques of surgery and occlusal therapy remains, and these are covered in this book.
