In 1934, the Editorial Committee of the Uni' versity of California approved a proposal to issue a volume in honor of Professor Setchell, who, in I 9 3 5, after forty years of active par ticipation in the life and work of the Univer sity, would become seventy years of age and Professor of Botany Emeritus. The editor was authorized to request articles dealing with the subject of the proposed book from distin guished botanists in this country and abroad. The magnitude of the editorial task which proved to be involved, together with certain unforeseen circumstances causing delays, have made it necessary that this anniversary volume appear post festum. The editor is under great obligation to the various authors fbr their in terest and cooperation, to Dr. H elen-m ar Wheeler, and to the editorial stafi 0 f the U ni versity of California Press for much assistance and advice.
