There appeared at intervals, d'wri'ng the last few years, several papers of mine on A meri ca/n poets and their art. At the request of some friends, I have made a selection of these Essays from Reviews. The sketches in this little volume, dealing in a general way, with the lives and careers of longfellow, lowell, holmes and whittier, are in tended as introductions to the writings of the great New England quartette of singers, whose work has done so much to make literature in America, what it is to-day.
