Before attempting the reading, a conversation based on the picture should make the pronunciation of each word familiar, and with it a proper intonation must be insisted upon. Practice in writing goes hand in hand with reading. Selecting an easy word, as fiat, the teacher may give the separate sounds, the pupils writing the word. Then sentences containing words already practiced should be written, and by constant repetition the pupil will learn to sound the letters for himself, and by the end of the year's work will be able to write simple sentences describing an object or a picture. The key to pronunciation and the footnotes are, of course, intended only for the teacher. The selections and songs at the end are, how ever, for the pupil. They should be carefully taught and learned, and will be a great aid in acquiring a correct pronunciation and into nation of the sentence.
