Publisher's Synopsis
This text combines both the general theories of entomology and modern principles of insect pest management. Developed for students with little or no background in entomology, it provides a better understanding of insects and their environment. It also examines the elements necessary to implement enviornmentally desirable pest management programmes.<p>The information on each species under discussion - its distribution, importance, appearance and life cycle - is presented in diagnostic boxes. Separate chapters on sampling and population assessment and economic guidelines for making management decisions are included. The problems of resistance, resurgence, and replacement are integrated in a chapter on ecological backlash, which helps students understand that applying tactics does not always result in sustainable solutions. Prevention is illustrated as the first form of management supplemented with curative action only as necessary.
