Little needs to be said as to the principles on which these Selections from the Sacred Feeley off/1.1: Olden Time are made. Most of the passages are placed here for their intrinsic merit. Their insertion requires neither explanation nor apology. The presence of a few, however, is due rather to the position and character of the writer than to the value of his poetry. A volume which aims to illustrate the religious literature of two centuries by means of extracts from its poetry, cannot consist exclusively of gems - as well might we attempt to delineate the physical aspects of a country by depicting only its high lands, leaving unnoticed its valleys and plains.
