Publisher's Synopsis
"English: an integrated approach" integrates language and literature, and is designed especially for students in Kenyan secondary schools. The course draws on current developments from the field of teaching English as a second language. It integrates the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, teaches grammar in context, uses a wide variety of texts and involves the student in an interactive way.;The 11 units of Student' s Book 4 offer students opportunities to explore written and listening passages and texts for speaking aloud (poetry, debate, drama and role play). The texts are thematically integrated, as is the language work on structure, sounds and vocabulary. A particular feature of the course is the carefully structured teaching of writing. This includes strictly controlled writing based on models, such as reports and articles, as well as free creative writing. Book 4 focuses on writing to a greater extent then the lower levels of the course. This is in response to the students' need to pass their examination at the end of the final year. Further preparation is allowed for in the tests at the end of each unit and in two practice tests. In all parts of the course, students are encouraged to take an active part in the learning process.;The accompanying teacher's text provides the answers to the exercises (where appropriate) and suggestions as to how the activities might be handled. Some optional exra activities are also included.
