Publisher's Synopsis
This book combines a treatment of traditional analytical methods with a thorough grounding in the finite element approach to engineering stress analysis.;The author introduces the computational techniques employed in finite element analysis by way of a FORTRAN program, FIESTA1, developed for a straight-forward one-dimensional problem. He then develops the more advanced program FIESTA2, for solving two- dimensional elastic problems, and describes a wide range of engineering applications. These programs, for which complete listings are provided, are designed as a teaching aid to familiarise the reader with some of the typical features of commercial finite element packages currently used in engineering design offices. This text is admirably suited to the less mathematically-minded reader, needing an elementary course in the mechanics of materials as the only prerequisite.
