This is a review of the properties of the naturally-occurring geological materials used in building and civil engineering construction. Introductory chapters are concerned with the description and basic engineering properties of rocks and soils after physical processing such as crushing, screening and washing. These are followed by a discussion of procedures used for sampling and testing geomaterials, both in situ and in the laboratory, including petrographic evaluation. Later sections examine applications of geomaterials, such as aggregates in road construction and concrete, bitumen and bitumen-aggregate mixtures, construction stone (including masonry) and the bahaviour of rocks and soils used as embankment fills.
