This text compiles recent technological advances relevant to the control and study of mammalian neurons "in vitro", including: the isolation and controlled survival, growth, and physiology of cultured mammilian neurons, including geometrically controlled growth of neurons using surface chemistry and micromachining; improved, non-invasive neuronal stimulation and recording methods, including advanced microelectrode and optical techniques; and theoretical and experimental frameworks for modelling and analyzing the data obtained from these networks.
