The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll the Lookout is a compilation of all seven novels that constitute the thrilling escapades of Mutis's iconic protagonist, an elderly seaman who travels to the most obscure corners of the globe and stands as a universal literary archetype. This first volume includes Snow of the Admiral, in which Maqroll embarks on a desperate voyage up the Xurandó River where, under a merciless sun and plagued by illness, he is shipwrecked, marking the start of his perilous adventures. We meet him again in Ilona Comes with the Rain, sailing aboard the Hansa Stern to Panama, where he falls into the arms of Ilona until another woman, Larissa, points the way to new journeys. Malraux's quip that "death transforms life into destiny" seems to be the maxim that governs Maqroll's wanderings in the next novel in the series, Un Bel Morir. He is caught up in a web of contraband and tragedy but survives to board a rundown cargo ship in The Tramp Steamer's Last Port of Call. As the crew sails from port to port, trading in any merchandise it can to stay afloat, the voyage becomes a metaphor for the fleetingness and futility of love. It ends the only way it can, in shipwreck.
