It's astounding that the author actually lived through drug use, alcohol use, and being raped by a cousin over several years, not to mention being a product of domestic violence.
Emancipation is a catalyst to "FREEDOM." The word emancipation means "FREEDOM"! The paramount cognitive development of a child, adolescent, young adult, and adult needs to be handled with sensitive words. What comes out of a person's mouth notwithstanding the tone of the wording can discrete that person for a lifetime!
