Bookseller Notes
This was Lhomond's most successful book, officially adopted for the nation's primary schools in An IV (1794). It was reprinted innumerable times - in France, in England, in the United States, with a dizzying array of edition statements, most of which are dubious. We have seen the date of the first edition given as 1780, but no copy earlier than, Paris, 1786 ('cinquime dition', as it happens) is in WorldCat or KVK, and of the present edition, just one copy is recorded, in Quebec. That solitary location leads one to speculate that the edition may have been intended at least as much for the colonial market as the domestic one.Inside the back cover the Anglo-Saxon alphabet is written out in pencil. An attractive copy.
