Excerpt from Elements of the Pathology of the Human Mind
The relation of physical phenomena to human happiness is amply investigated in the present day. But the direct and practical effect, which the philosophy of mind is calculated to produce, has received far less systematic enquiry. That this should be the case, might easily be anticipated from the different degree of precision, which the steps made in each of these pursuits are capable of obtaining. And yet, with less public estimation of their value, the few princi ples thus actually obtained are calculated to exert a most beneficial in?uence on mankind.
As instances of such discoveries, I might adduce the supremacy of conscience as established on moral grounds by Dr. Butler; and his hypothesis, that habit strengthens active principles, and weakens passive impressions.
It is my object in these pages to bring the philosophy of mind to bear upon the conduct of life in some new points of contact.
