Publisher's Synopsis

Why do we think?
How do you know?
What is 'out there?'

In this provocative and groundbreaking study, the author examines these and other fascinating questions that are becoming everyday more important as we rely on machines large and small to do our "thinking" for us. Although the author has described his work as "cut-rate philosophy for students and house-husbands," his Elements is in fact an exacting treatise on meaning and understanding from the natural standpoint of the universe as we apprehend it. Renowned neuro-plasmologist Santiago Guzmel has said of it: "Here is a book of seminal importance that fundamentally reinvents our notion of consciousness and of our place in the world."

Are microbes conscious?
Do trees have feelings?
Can machines think?

David Bartholomew was born in Baltimore, USA, and grew up in Europe and East Asia where his Quaker parents served with the American Friends Society. He was educated in Europe and the United States and lived for several years in Tanzania where he worked as a photographer, tour guide, teacher, courier and informant. He lives in Spain and raises orchids.
