Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Electrician and Mechanic, Vol. 24: January, 1912-June, 1912

In this formula, P equals the mean effective pressure, L equals the length of the engine stroke, A equals the area of the engine piston, and N equals the number of revolutions per minute. P is measured in pounds per square inch, L in feet, and A in square inches. Thus it is at once seen that plan gives us the work done in foot-pounds, and since a horse-power is the quantity of work equivalent to the raising of lbs.
