The successful penetration of electric vehicles into the Nation's fleet would allow the transportation sector to meet part of its demand for energy with electricity and increase its energy efficiency. Since only about 4 percent of our electricity is generated from petroleum, this substitution would also reduce the sector's near total dependence on petroleum fuels.
