Elastic Waves in Solids with Applications to Nondestructive Testing of Pipelines provides an up-to-date coverage of the propagation and scattering of elastic waves in solids, emphasizing practical applications in the field of nondestructive testing. The book grew out of studies carried out during the development of a system to inspect gas transmission pipelines for longitudinal cracks. The author's work formed part of a project carried out by Harwell under contract to the On Line Inspection Centre of British Gas. The book is self-contained, starting from the fundamental ideas of elasticity and the basic properties of bulk, surface and guided waves, reflection and refraction. The description of scattering theory, using both the differential and the integral form of the wave equation, covers exact methods and approximations.
