The father of Laura Winthrop, long resident at New Haven, was a descendant of Governor Winthrop, of Connecticut, and her mother was a sister of President Woolsey, of Yale College. Theodore Winthrop was her brother. In N. P. Willis's first thin little volume of poems, which he called Sketches, published in Boston by S. G. Goodrich, in 1827, one of the most melodious and characteristic is addressed to Laura W., Two Years of Age. It describes a lovely child.
