Primary production can be a nuisance when it is in the form of algal blooms which are unsightly or cause taste and odor problems in drinking water. Suspended sediment can limit or prevent such blooms by reducing light penetra tion and adsorbing nutrients, such as phosphorous, which stimulate plant growth Such blooms might occur in many bodies of water in Illinois if suspended.
