The controlling theme is economic growth, but the book also assesses the impact on growth that is provided by historical, demographic, cultural, institutional, political, and international situations. In each chapter statistics are presented for 20 developing countries, plus statistics for different regions as a whole. Emphasis is placed on long run trends covering the post-war period.
