Capturing a slow, distressing drift of exile and dispossession, these photographs document the artist's life spent fleeing Soviet occupation of his native Afghanistan, and seeking temporary refuge in the ambiguous territories and peoples of Cuba, India, Mali, the Philippines, Indonesia and Egypt, before his final return. The changing interplay of composition, light and faces infuses these photographs, which speak of the fragility of presence and sketch a fragmented story of a search for place when one's own land has been destroyed.
