Excerpt from Duluth Public Library Twenty-Fourth and Twenty-Fifth Annual Reports: For the Years 1913 1914
I have the honor to present herewith the twenty seventh annual report of the Duluth Public Library, covering the work of the institution from January first to December thirty-first, 1916. For the first time in the incumbency of the present librarian, the circulation for the year shows a decrease from the previous one. There are a num ber of causes for this: first, the report for 1915 included thirteen months so that the actual differ ence in circulation between the two years is a net loss of instead of the large falling off which a casual reading of the figures would indicate; sec ond, a marked decrease in interest and patronage from the general public, in the rebound from the hard times and depression of the previous year; third, the inability of the library to grow with the city, and to reach the new centers of population with library facilities. This is due partly to the fact that the library fund is not large enough and partly because the main building requires more and more expenditure each year for up - keep.
