Resigning her position on the Portland, Oregon, Police Department never enters Brenda Tower's mind until she meets Lin Stone, a county sheriff in southeastern Washington. She throws off her vacation to help the sheriff bring down a vicious killer and they end up in each other's arms. Accepting a detective sergeant position on the Walla Walla Police Department puts her 30 miles from Stone's town of Dayton. If they are to enjoy a future together, she must have ample time to really get to know him. She moves to Walla Walla with the expectation that she will have a slower work pace with less violent crime. Unfortunately, her expectation, the image in her mind, does not match the reality on the ground. The Washington State Board of Prisons recently released ninety inmates from the Walla Walla Penitentiary to make room for newly sentenced felons. Some of these men are hardened criminals. Walla Walla and surrounding communities are experiencing a spike in burglary, human trafficking, assault, rape, and murder.
