The episode occurred in her tenth year, and took place in the dusk of a November afternoon when she and her mother sat by the fire in the sitting-room Of the little house in Caroline Place, where all the days Of her memory had been spent.
Anne sat on her stool at one side Of the hearth. Her mother leaned back in the carved black chair at the other, with her back to the light.
