Excerpt from Drawings of the U. S. S. Monitor: A Catalog and Technical Analysis
This study was undertaken to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources of the State of North Carolina in the identification and understanding of the surviving engineering drawings of the uss. Monitor, and thereby provide a basis for the analysis of the condition of the wreck and the planning of future archaeological programs in the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. As a result of this study, 207 historic drawings have been assembled describing the uss. Monitor concept spanning 125 years from the early efforts of John Ericsson to the ongoing interests of modern ship model builders. The range of drawings collected includes sketches in correspondence, newspapers, magazines and book articles and both working and final engineering drawings by the designer of the Monitor, John Ericsson, his staff and the draftsmen of the Continental Iron Works. Each drawing has been documented to the extent possible. A complete understanding of a few must wait upon further examination of the wreck site. It is hoped that this collection will stimulate the search for and discovery of additional material of this nature.
