Publisher's Synopsis

Two sisters were working in the midst of political turmoil in the Far East. Both escaped from the terrors of the Japanese invasion in WW2. Letters describe civil war in China and a diary tells of the destruction, chaos and indecision in Burma, and a difficult and exhausting journey where Josephine was one of tens of thousands of refugees who ended up having to walk through dense jungle and mountains to India. Many perished on these journeys. In 1946 she returned to Burma and recorded experiences of Burmese and Karen people during the Japanese occupation. Included is a veteran's account of his part in the Burma Campaign. Many excellent old photos of Burma give fascinating glimpses of a country cut off from the world for 60 years, with some taken on visits to Myanmar in 2012. Original material is linked with accounts of history of a terrible period in the Far East, often referred to as 'The Forgotten War'.
