Excerpt from Directory to the Iron and Steel Works of the United States
Of the new furnaces which were built in 1890 and 1891 it is notice able that 16 were charcoal furnaces, located in nine States, even New England rebuilding one abandoned furnace. The building of 3 of these furnaces in Texas emphasizes the fact that this State is now entitled to recognition as one of the promising iron-producing States of the Union. The building of 4 new charcoal furnaces in Michigan is an event which is also significant. This State is within such easy communication by railroad and water with great centres of pig-iron consumption, especially for foundry purposes, that, with its rich iron ores and still abundant supplies of accessible timber, no good reason exists why it should not continue to increase its annual production of charcoal pig iron.
