Publisher's Synopsis
The Directory of Ongoing Research in Cancer Epidemiology compiles information on current research projects in the field of cancer epidemiology. The 1987 edition, which is the 12th in the series, contains 1323 projects carried out in more than 80 countries. The USA and UK are still by far the largest contributors and, although their contribution has decreased in the last years, they still cover about 40% of the projects. Other parts of the world, such as the People's Republic of China, South America and Scandinavia, have slightly increased their contribution.;The 1987 issue shows that the most common cancer sites under study are still lung, female breast, cervix and gastrointestinal tract. A slight increase in the number of studies of occupational exposures is seen this year, after a slow down in the previous years, and "intervention" continues to be of interest, as is the possible role of viruses in the aetiology of cancer. The Directory also contains a small number of projects in the field of mutation epidemiology. As usual this publication contains a list of biological material banks and lists of population-based cancer registries.;The following indexes facilitate access to the information in the directory: investigator, general terms, cancer site, chemical, occupation, type of study and country where date are being collected. Inclusion of full addresses of the principal investigator, together with telephone and telex numbers when available, is a helpful feature and facilitates contacts between research workers.;Oncologists, epidemiologists, pathologists, biostatisticians.
