Lola, a kind-hearted seven-year-old foster child, was instructed by her father never to talk about what occurred in her household. Unfortunately, she misinterpreted the instruction as a warning, "Do not talk," literally. Lola became selectively mute for nearly a year after moving into her foster home. She only spoke to her foster mother, and even then, her words were barely audible. She refused to talk and went about her school day in silence. Lola eventually rediscovered her sweet voice thanks to her foster cousin and parents' patience, understanding, and love.
