The first part of the volume with 18 articles deals with the eventful external history of the country under the Habsburgs from Rudolf I to the Emperors Friedrich III. and Maximilian I., when Styria became a subsidiary country of far-reaching politics and had to cope with the plague and enemy incursions. This is followed by the constitution and administration of the country, the role of the estates and national defence, as well as the material profile of the country with the development of society from the nobility and farmers to the town system, the economy and mining. A third part is devoted to spiritual and cultural life with education, literature and science, musical life, architecture and painting from the Gothic to the Renaissance.
