Rolla muss sich entscheiden, ob er sich auf die Seite der Peruaner schlägt oder treu zu seinem Heimatland Spanien steht. Das Stück schildert auf eindrückliche Weise die Konflikte und Ambivalenzen der Kolonialzeit und ist ein Meilenstein der deutschsprachigen Theaterliteratur.
