1953 was a year of political restrictions against the eastern member churches of the EKD, but also the year of a turnaround in church politics in the GDR, which began with the church-state talks on June 10, 1953. After the election victory of the Adenauer government in autumn 1953, the EKD succeeded in expanding its political influence by filling important positions in politics and ministerial bureaucracy.
