Wenn auch einzelne Ansichten Schmidts nicht unwidersprochen bleiben konnten, so bedeutet sein Aufsatz doch einen grossen Schritt weiter in dem Verst�ndnisse J's und der von ihm mit solcher Vor liebe geptiegten Gattung. Auch in England war inzwischen das Verst�ndnis f�r J gewachsen. Das Werk von Craik ist ein Be weis davon. Zun�chst �ussert sich Craik �ber die Masques �hnlich wie Gifl'ord: the airy elegance of these compositions is a perfect 0011trast to the stern and rugged strength of his other works; the lyrical parts of them especially have often a grace and sportiveness, a [low as well as a finish, the efiect of which is very brilliant. Jedoch hat Craik gleich Schlegel die Empfindung, dass jenes un nennbare Etwas fehle, das immer anzieht und bezaubert, eben weil' es sich nicht erkl�ren l�sst (siehe oben): Still even in these, we nant the dewy light and rich coloured irradition of the poetry of Shakespeare and Fletcher: the lustre is pure and bright, but at the same time cold and sharp, like that of crystal (s.
