A diary translated from the Japanese written by the founder of the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society, Kiyoshi Tokutomi. He was born in 1923 in Watsonville, CA. At age eight when his father died, he was sent with his siblings to his mother's family in Japan to be cared for while she stayed in the U.S. to work to support them. He had just graduated from high school when the war broke out. He contracted tuberculosis. After the war he returned to the U.S. The treatmemt of the disease and subsequent pneumonia using kanamycin left him totaly deaf. This diary written from July 1975 to December 1977 shows a person who deals with personal adversity with character and inventiveness. The diary covers the early years of the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society which he and his wife, Kiyoko, founded.
