The development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition - Primary Care Version (DSM-IV-PC) was formally initiated in 1990 as a multidisciplinary effort involving representatives from family medicine (American Academy of Family Physicians, Association of Departments of Family Medicine, American Board of Family Practice and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine), internal medicine (Society of General Internal Medicine and American College of Physicians), paediatrics (American Academy of Paediatrics), obstetrics and gynaecology (American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), and psychiatry (American Psychiatric Association). Recent epidemiological research has demonstrated that individuals with psychiatric and substance abuse disorders are often seen only in primary care settings, and that the under-recognition of these disorders has a great impact on the health care of individuals, on broader public health issues, and on health care costs.;The manual was developed according to the guiding principles initially established: user friendliness, to make the manual a useful assessment tool for primary care clinicians by removing technical jargon and keeping material as concise as possible; clinical utility, designed to be compatible with how the primary care visit is managed (beginning with presenting symptoms and discriminating between and amongst disorders); educational utility, to ensure the manual serves as an important curriculum tool in medical education (it should aid students, residents and clinicians to recognise the symptoms of mental and addictive disorders, and to consider appropriate diagnoses); compatability, to enhance reliable, valid communication among health specialties, and to ensure applicability for coding and reimbursement (it is important that the manual is compatible with DSM-IV and ICD-9-CM (and ultimately, ICD-10); and research utility, to be a resource for furthering mental health research in primary care, linking to research criteria sets in the DSM-IV for certain conditions more commonly seen in primary care.;This is a spiral-bound version of the paperback edition of this book.
