Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in neonates is the most common cause of postnatal critical illness of inflammatory genesis. For a long time, pathological conditions such as functional intestinal obstruction, intra-abdominal abscess, spontaneous ileum perforation, appendicitis, necrotizing colitis in neonates with perforation, ischaemic enterocolitis and infarction of the neonatal bowel were synonymous with NEC.
