Le originarie funzioni dei giudici di pace inglesi (quan do essi non sedevano alle sessioni generali o trimestrali) erano specialmente di' prevenire i perturbamenti della pub blica tranquillità. E far arrestare i delinquenti; ma quelle funzioni sono andate man mano estendendosi. Gran numero dei minori reati potevano convenientemente esser trattati da loro, senza le spese e le lungaggini della procedura da vanti le Corti ordinarie; e però' di tanto in tanto gli sta tuti concessero a quei magistrati anche autorità. Per cono scere di tali reati e punire i_ trasgressori.
