Sylvester Rosecrans, a native of Homer in Licking County, Ohio, was the only Bishop of Columbus to have been born within its boundaries. Having been led into the Catholic Church by his brother, the famous Civil War General, he became devoted to the truth he found there. He was ordained in Rome, was a pastor, lecturer, college professor and president, seminary theologian, newspaper editor in Cincinnati and Columbus, and the first auxiliary bishop ever appointed in the United States.
