In the year 1865 the writer of the following pages had the honor, as President of the British Medical Association for the West of England, to deliver an Address to the members of the profession, in which he spoke of some of the memorable deeds of remarkable men in North Devon from the time of the Norman Conquest, but more particularly of those who lived in the eventful reign of Queen Elizabeth. This' part of the Address appeared to excite so much interest, that the writer resolved to devote an hour or two in the early morning, before the labours of the day commenced, in extending his researches amongst ancient and voluminous works, as well as those of more modern date, in order to record more fully the history of some of Tke Dewmkz're Celeb ri?es.
