Publisher's Synopsis
Industry in the UK is beginning to recognise the scale of opportunities presented by biotechnology but is still failing to exploit fully its strengths in the biosciences. This report highlights the areas of strength and weakness, and makes recommendations. It concludes that the potential benefits of biotechnology are considerable, affecting key issues such as food production, waste recycling and pollution control, and allowing major advances in medicine. A series of appendices provide examinations of plant and animal biotechnology and protein engineering, as well as non-technical factors such as ethical, environmental and safety considerations.
