Publisher's Synopsis
This three-volume set examines the relationship between government and civil society in their efforts to define and pursue security. Including the results of an extensive research program, each volume is organized around one of the three principal themes û environment, people and globalization, supplying compelling evidence of the tension between economic change and human well-being. - - Development is a contested term, with interpretations which often presume a combination of economic growth with positive social consequences. Through a series of case studies drawn primarily from Indonesia and the Philippines, this second volume provides evidence that outcomes are actually very mixed in terms of the personal security and well-being of people and communities as they face the challenges introduced by development. Ethnically distinct communities, workers' interests, migrant workers and food vendors are among the subjects explored.
