Publisher's Synopsis
When you enter prison, they take your fingerprints and your photo. Three shots: front, left profile and right profile. You leave your name and number at the entrance and in exchange you receive a number, you lose your own face, adopting one which is startled and irresponsible. The passage between having and losing your face is marked by the ceremony of the photograph. In this collection of photographs by Mauro D'Agnati, scenes of everyday life on the inside of Italian prisons are shown for what they are: the habitat of the inmate.
