Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Designs of the Slave Power: Speech of Hon. Reuben E. Fenton, of New York; Delivered in the U. S. House of Representatives, February 24, 1858
In 1820 this principle was reaffirmed, notwithstanding Slavery had, from 1803 up to this period, insidiously ex tended itself over large fields of the Louisiana purchase, while the people of the free States were in the quiet of repose upon this question, 011 were engaged in the conflict of arms with a foreign Power. I say the principle was then reaffirmed; and the only remedy, in my judgment, for the present alarming condition of affairs, is to return to this principle, decreeing for all the Territories Freedom now, Freedom forever.
