This study of the design of urban parks is based on 50 of the most interesting designs submitted for the Concours International: Parc de la Villette, Paris, 1982/83.;The text and line drawings serve to provide a step-by-step analysis of these designs and to illustrate the principles on which they are based. The result provides insight into the design of parks and contemporary design in general. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the modern design process and complex urban development projects, such as urban renewal schemes.;It also discusses the tradition of park and landscape architecture and how this relates to current debates concerning the design of parks.
