It was decided at the outset that, as far as was prae ticable, the collection should be divided into two classesw - a general and a select series, a plan not always to be recom mended, but necessary in this case on account of the bulk of the collection. The present catalogue is that of the select series only, the catalogue of the general series being preserved in manuscript in the Evidence Room.
