English summary: The contributions in this volume illuminate the cultural, historical and religious or philosophical patterns and modalities which caused people in ancient times to choose a particular lifestyle and examine the representation and evaluation of these lifestyles in the form of images and text. In each case, the focus lies on the question of the relationship to the 'world' and on positioning between opposing poles with regard to attentiveness and distance, orientation towards this world or the afterworld, retreat and responsibility, and finally of theory and reality. The authors have backgrounds in Classical and Byzantine Studies as well as in Theology. The contributions are based on the symposium Menschenbilder zwischen Weltverantwortung und Weltflucht (images of mankind between commitment and escapism) held as part of the postgraduate research group Gotterbilder - Gottesbilder - Weltbilder (images of Gods - images of God - images of the world) at the University of Gottingen.
German description: Die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes leuchten die kulturellen, historischen und religiosen oder philosophischen Muster und Modalitaten aus, die die Menschen der Antike zur Wahl einer bestimmten Lebensform veranlasst haben, und untersuchen die Darstellung und Beurteilung dieser Lebensmodelle in Bild- und Textmedien. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei jeweils die Frage nach dem Verhaltnis zur 'Welt' und die Position im Spannungsfeld von Zugewandtheit und Distanzierung, Diesseits- oder Jenseitsorientierung, Ruckzug und Verantwortung, schliesslich auch zwischen Modell und Realisierung.
Die Autoren stammen aus den Fachern der klassischen Altertumswissenschaft und Byzantinistik sowie der Theologie, die Beitrage gehen zuruck auf das Symposion 'Menschenbilder zwischen Weltverantwortung und Weltflucht' des Graduiertenkollegs "Gotterbilder - Gottesbilder - Weltbilder" der Universitat Gottingen.
