Publisher's Synopsis
"Democracy and Selfgovernment -- Selfgovernment within a Democracy" evokes a lot: the history of ideas, of constitutions, politics and administration; the law and practices of government by "the people", in Germany realized, to a great extent, by public government and by different ways of selfgovernment (area-specific and local government); and, finally, the question of necessary changes, adjustments or even resistance. These questions are discussed in view of old and new challenges: Europeanization and the understanding of democracy, self-regulating systems and their limitations, results and losses of local government and "funktionale Selbstverwaltung" (self-administration in specific aereas).
