Publisher's Synopsis

What are the prospects for China's democratization? Does Taiwan's political development hold insights for China's future evolution? This book investigates these timely questions by analysing the reform strategies of party elites in both China and Taiwan. Combining insights from the comparative study of democratization and the experiences of Leninist parties, the book describes the ability of Leninist leaders to adapt their parties to the new challenges that confront them. By considering the changing composition of party elites and their strategies fro coping with changes in their domestic and international environments, the book offers a new perspective on Taiwan's democratization and fresh insights into the extent of political reforms in post-Mao China. It will appeal to students of contemporary China and Taiwan, as well as those with a general interest in democratization.
