Various approaches to definite nominal phrase anaphora are discussed in this book, and a purely syntactic analysis is criticized. An alternative approach is offered, in which the co-reference options of pronouns and full NPs are accounted for on the basis of certain pragmatic principles, such as the well-known principle of functional sentence perspective (FSP) of the Prague school of linguistics.
